Maria Louis has multiple years of experience as an advocate working on a wide range of issues such as cases of child custody, guardianship, tribal law, tribal land issues, housing and health issues of tribal’s, domestic violence cases, property right related cases, environmental cases and rights of marginalized community. Her journey can be reflected in a case, very close to her heart, wherein she helped a minor mother who had to abandon her child as she was a student. Later, with Maria’s help, the mother got the custody of the child and she finished her studies and qualified as a doctor at the age of 25. If not practicing as a lawyer, Maria would be pursuing her goal of ensuring access to justice through social work. Working in a field dominated by men for years together, Maria has always stood up against gender bias at the workplace, judiciary and in the society. An avid reader, ‘Infidel’, a book written by Ayan Hirssi Ali portraying the bitter life experience of a Muslim girl who later became the voice of the entire Muslim community, inspires her to keep pursuing her work in this field.
