Sexual Minority and Gender Rights Initiative (HUMJINSI)

In 1997, SLIC co-organised a “National conference on rights of sexuality minorities” in Mumbai. Soon afterwards, the India Centre for Human Rights and Law, Mumbai, established the Humjinsi project. In April 2003, it set up an advisory board consisting of lesbian and bisexual women and national women’s movement activists to ensure accountability and community participation in the planning of our programmes. The initiative works with these groups to support women who are attracted to women in their efforts to be themselves, to build a community which celebrates their identity, to secure their rights in society, and most importantly, to help LGBT and hijra individuals overcome obstacles to establish a society which celebrates and protects the rights of sexual minorities. A major focus of its work is campaigning against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which criminalises homosexuality.
