The battle for existence in Sundarban
Tiger, Crocodile
and human conflict is a regular crisis in the Sundarban Forest established
legend for the years. Several cyclonic landfalls such as AILA, AMPHAN and YASS
also added a new segment of battle for survival in the Sundarban. It not only led to a sensitive anxiety for
remarkable mortality of the people living in this delta region as well as
displacement question has been arising from their traditional abode due to
global warming and climate change.
Hunting and gathering is a primitive instinct of the people in this area. From the early times villagers usually went to Sundarban for collecting fuel and fodders. They used to collect HATAL LEAVES for their house roof. MOULI (traditional honey collectors) goes to Sundarban to collect pure honey and earn money selling it. Fisher folks catch fishes, crabs and minor forest products. And the main attraction of the people goes to Sundarban for collecting the finest timber of Geo, Garan and Sundari for making doors, windows, boats for fishing and transporting purposes. Some of the island's boats are only the source of transportation. People have been struggling for their existence in Sundarban areas especially the tiger widows whose husbands were seized upon and killed by the tigers while going out fishing, collecting honey, catching crabs, cutting trees and collecting fuel and fodder. The widows of tiger-attacked husbands have to bear with the ineffable stigma proportionate with tiger-killing and chronological social exclusions and bigotry.
